Enjoy a Family Day Out at the Mississippi Aquarium in Biloxi

If you are in the mood for a fun family day out, why not visit the Mississippi Aquarium in Gulfport? This nonprofit aquarium is scheduled to open on August 29, 2020. It is home to more than 200 species of animals and 50 native plant species. There are even daily animal shows, so you can see what the animals look like in their natural habitats. You’ll also find an interactive touch tank where you can see how animals communicate.

The Aquarium has many great features, including a massive “swirl tank” that holds tens of thousands of sardines. A tunnel that is cut through the main tank offers 360-degree views of the aquarium’s other exhibits. You can see rays, sharks, sheepshead, and grouper up close. You can even walk into a giant shark tank! The Aquarium has some great outdoor seating, but make sure to bring a blanket because the aquarium’s cafe is outside with no shade.

When it opens, you’ll get the chance to see some of the Gulf Coast’s most amazing creatures up close. A new exhibit will display a unique ecosystem of freshwater animals and aquatic plants, as well as a giant aviary. The aquarium will also feature an exhibit depicting the habitat of the Gulf of Mexico, including a concrete riverbed. The new attraction will also spur development in the Gulfport area, including two hotels and a retail center. Ultimately, the aquarium is sure to be a success!

There’s also a great dolphin encounter that is unique to the Mississippi Aquarium. During the program, you’ll be guided by a trained trainer through the dolphin’s behaviors and give it a try! The trainers will answer your questions, and a 6×8 photo will be provided to you as a memento. For food and drink, you can visit the Pelican Cafe, located between the aviary and river. You can also purchase gifts in the Gulf Shop, which carries a wide variety of items inspired by the Mississippi coastline.

The Mississippi Aquarium and NGI are partners with the Mississippi State University’s Northern Gulf Institute. MSU-SEAS is a program that teaches children about sustainable choices and positive behavior in the Gulf of Mexico’s marine ecosystem. The program focuses on the benefits of learning and education and involves public and homeschool students. The program is free to the public and includes both elementary and secondary school students. If you’re in the area, the aquarium is definitely worth the trip.

Another great feature of the Gulf Coast Aquarium is its accessibility. It was built with accessibility in mind and has wide, shaded walking paths throughout the aquarium. While the Gulf Coast Aquarium can be hot during the summer months, many exhibits are outdoors. Visitors should remember to bring water or an umbrella if the weather is hot. A good thing to remember when visiting is that this aquarium is open seven days a week. It’s well worth the trip, and there’s always plenty to do in Biloxi.
